Dhafer Youssef wanders in the territory between jazz and oriental mysticism. Expansively radiant, tinged with a sense of the epic, his music oozes melancholy. He plays on the tension of a fragile balance between ancient, ancestral sounds and contemporary arrangements, between feverish musical phrasings and suspensions of silence, their cohesiveness coming from the emotion and intensity sustained throughout.
“Birds Requiem”, his latest, and arguably greatest, album, is an invitation to epic raptures, weaving jazz with oriental mysticism.
